String instruments & choosing the right option

Updated: Sep 29

The violin and cello must be the most iconic instruments associated with love and romance. String instruments are often used to serenade lovers but how do you choose the right option for your special day? We are here to help you!

The violin and cello must be the most iconic instruments associated with love and romance. String instruments are often used to serenade lovers be it at an anniversary, proposal, wedding or vow renewal ceremony. Even Prince Harry and Princess Meghan made use of a young talented cellist at their royal wedding. His performance was so remarkable that it immediately sparked global curiosity as to who the young man was. “Her dress was beautiful… but… did you hear the cellist that played at the ceremony?”

Not that we want to steal your entrance, dear prospective bride!

String instruments have the ability to communicate emotion without words and to leave people feeling inspired or moved by the music. In essence, each string instrument can be seen as a human voice.

Charles Auguste De Beriot wrote: “The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments.”

Classical and Contemporary

We want to break the mould that string ensembles (group of string players) are only limited to classical music or deemed “outdated” by people who gravitate more towards contemporary music. You see, because string instruments are so much like the human voice, it lends itself perfectly to versatility and adaptability. Think of Hans Zimmer, the king of symphonic film scores, that creates hauntingly beautiful soundtracks to something like “2Cellos” that covers everything from Despacito to Hallelujah.

Choosing the right option

In order to choose the right string option for your wedding day, we have listed the top three most important things to keep in mind:

  1. Is the venue in- or outdoors?

  2. How many guests have you invited?

  3. How long would you like to string player/s to perform?

“Is there an echo in here?” – acoustics! We love acoustics… especially when it is only a solo string player or a duo option like a violin & cello. Imagine a vocalist (or two) standing outside singing, with a light breeze blowing, and with no microphone… The quality of sound is similar to that of an acoustic violin or string duo.

Indoor venues have natural acoustics or in other words, walls to bounce sound from that helps to enhance and carry sound waves, whereas outdoor venues tend to lose a bit of quality. For that reason we highly recommend bigger string ensemble like the trio (violin, viola & cello) or the quartet (2 violins, viola & cello) for outdoor venues and a solo/duo option for indoor venues.

EXCEPTION: Should you have an intimate wedding of less than 30 people, then a solo or duo option could also work for outdoor venues because the sound doesn’t have to carry too far.

Information Table

Solo (instrument of your choice: violin / viola / cello)

- well-suited for indoor venues in terms of acoustics

- can be used outdoors for micro-weddings (less than 30 people)

- perfect for ceremonies

Duo (combination of your choice)

- well-suited for indoor venues

- can be used outdoors for micro-weddings (less than 30 people)

- perfect for ceremonies and/or pre-drink entertainment

Trio (combination of your choice)

- perfect for bigger venues (indoors & outdoors)

- good variety of repertoire (can play for more than 3 hours)

Quartet

- flagship ensemble

- perfect for big venues

- wide variety of repertoire (can play for more than 4 hours)

- rich, full-bodied sound

The string quartet is definitely the “Rolls Royce” of string ensembles. Not only because of their rich and full bodied sound, but also because so many composers wrote music for the quartet. The quartet can play for hours on end without sounding monotonous, whereas a solo instrument should only be used for the ceremony or a short period of time. Once again, imagine one female voice like a soprano, singing both at the ceremony and during pre-drinks… We want to bet that you might take a break from that soprano Spotify set list for a while…

Electric Violin VS Acoustic Violin

The electric violin is a modern twist on the acoustic violin. It does however depend on a sound system for proper amplification. This is such a perfect entertainment option during pre-drinks because it speaks to all genres and covers everything from classical-crossover music, to ambient songs, jazz and contemporary music (with backing track). So everyone from your grandma to your BFF, and your cousin’s teenage twins will find something relatable.

If you would like to consider mixing both the acoustic violin and the electric violin at your wedding, we highly recommend the following customisable package:

Acoustic classical violin at the ceremony and electric contemporary violin during pre-drinks! You are welcome to customise this package by adding a string duo / trio / quartet for the ceremony rather than the solo acoustic violin. Request more information regarding this package by sending us an email to info@resoundmusic.co.za or completing our online contact form.
